Submit for credit.

The Companion is divided into 16 chapters that align with the NCARB's 16 IDP training areas. Here is a step-by-step guide to how interns and architects can get credit for work done with the EPC.

Interns: Earn IDP Credit: Minimum (core) Training Units as well as Supplementary Education

You can earn a maximum of 225 credits through the EPC. Each practice exercise as well as each application activity are worth one training unit.

Use the EPC 2009 to satisfy a portion of your IDP training unit (TU) requirements. By successfully completing EPC application activities, you can earn up to 5 TUs toward the minimum (core) requirements in each training area (up to 75 TUs total in EPC 2009).

Please note that no more than 5 TUs may be earned in any IDP training area toward minimum TU requirements through any combination of EPC 2009 activities and/or other supplementary education options offered by NCARB. Learn more about all supplementary education options.

You can also earn supplementary education TUs by successfully completing EPC 2009 practice exercises and additional application activities not claimed toward minimum required IDP training units. As always, your IDP supervisor must review and approve all work.

Steps to submitting for IDP credit:

  1. Complete an EPC practice exercise or application activity and note the chapter and title.
  2. Review your work with your IDP supervisor (or mentor as of January 1, 2010).
  3. Go to the electronic – Experience Verification Reporting system (e-EVR).
  4. Navigate to the "My Supplementary Education" tab.
  5. Select EPC from the drop down menu.
  6. Select the practice exercise or application activity (listed by chapter and title).
  7. Submit for approval.

If you completed exercises in the previous edition of the EPC (before July 1, 2009) and need to submit them, please e-mail idp@aia.org for instructions.

Architects: AIA Continuing Education

Architects can gain AIA Continuing Education credit for work done with the Companion. The credit can be used to count toward the AIA mandatory requirement and is accepted by most states for their licensee requirements. Non-members will need to request CPE records services to receive an AIA Transcript.

Supervisors and Mentors: AIA Continuing Education

The AIA encourages IDP Supervisors and IDP Mentors to self-report the time spent preparing for a meeting with an intern and/or the time spent meeting with the intern as a continuing education opportunity. The AIA will award two learning units annually. The units should be self-reported under the Professional and Community Service category on the AIA Self-Report Form. The units are not HSW and are not recognized by all jurisdictions.
